Monthly Bulletin of the Rotary Club of Panaji

The Rotary  Club of Panaji proudly boasts of being the 1st club to be Chartered in Goa. The club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Belgaum under the guidance of Governors Special Representative Rtn. Dr. Hanam Shet. The preliminary meetings of the club took place from November 1962 and our club was finally chartered on 30th Jan’ 1963 under the Presidentship of legal luminary Dr Jorge Athaide Lobo. Rtn. Reghurai Tamba was the first club Secretary and all the 25 Charter members were the crème de la crème of contemporary society, literally the Who’s Who of Panaji. The R.I. President at the  time was Rtn. Nitish Laharry, the first Indian to be so. His theme for the year ‘Kindle the spark within’ was the inspiration for our monthly bulletin ‘Spark’. One of our earliest projects in 1963,  the Children's Park at Mira Mar, with its Rocket Slide and Fish is a virtual landmark, along with the Pergola. To mark Rotary International’s Centenary in 2005, we have added a Park for Senior Citizens adjacent to the Childrens Park at Mira Mar. Another successful and welcome project during the early years – 1965 to be precise – was the adoption of Curca Village and construction of an Aganwadi and Health Centre there. In our 50 years of existence, The Rotary Club of Panaji is proud to show a lot of achievements and quite as few firsts. The club has constructed a Toilet block and library for Sharada Vidyalaya High School at Cumbarjua, set up a library for Our Lady of Merces High School and provided Educational and Therapic equipment worth Rs.5.5 lacs for the Disha School for special children. Financial Scholarships to numerous deserving students over Rs.27 lacs  and The latest mage project  is Setting of Eye bank in State of Goa. The list is endless, but we do not believe in sitting back and resting on our laurels. Just as Robert Frost said – ‘There are miles to go before we sleep’.
